PM Turnbull Gets 'Hands On' with Cirrus Technology

At the opening of Raytheon Australia’s System Integration facility in Adelaide, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull inspected the Australian Submarine Industry Incubator (ASII) in which the Cirrus Battery Manager Application (BMA) technology was operating alongside standard AN/BYG-1 tactical displays.

Cirrus’ Managing Director, Mr. Peter Freed described to the Prime Minister, his wife Lucy Turnbull, and the Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP, the need for modern technology to minimise the vulnerability of the submarine platform during battery charging operations at the surface.

Mr. Freed, together with Cirrus’ senior engineer, Mr Mark Hansen, provided a hands-on demonstration of the software in operation. This included dynamically replanning battery charging to avert counter-detection by a known threat drawn from the combat system, which prompted the Prime Minister to express his appreciation for Australian Small Medium Enterprises engaged in the development of cutting edge technology.

Following the demonstration, the Prime Minister announced the awarding to Raytheon Australia of a $297M contract for the remediation and subsequent support of the Woomera Weapons Range, and that Raytheon Australia’s team for the project includes leading Australian technology SME’s; Cirrus, Daronmont Systems and CEA.

Referring to these three Australian companies Mr. Turnbull stated “These are all Australian technologies at the very cutting edge of the world’s best and of course, contributing increasingly to exports.”

Cirrus’ role on the Woomera project relates to the supply of software technology that coordinates the collection of exercise data, and facilitates post exercise data analysis.
